Hedge Cutting in Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown.

Cutting, reduction, removal and planting across the Deal seafront, the Walmer villas, the Kingsdown cliffs and the Mill Hill inland edge. Fully insured. I plan around the bird-nesting window (1 March – 31 August). Six-week conservation-area notice handled for you.

What I do

Four services. No upselling.

Specified for Deal's coastal shingle and Holocene alluvium, the salt-laden easterlies off the Channel, and the seven conservation areas that cover most of Middle Street, Walmer and Kingsdown.

Routine hedge cutting

Annual or twice-yearly cuts on Escallonia, Griselinia, privet, yew, hornbeam and holly. Formal clipped lines in Walmer, gentler cottage looseness on Middle Street. Arisings cleared, no power tools after 6pm.

See pricing & timing

Height & width reduction

Bringing overgrown hedges back into proportion, including the one-sided browning leylandii along Beach Street and the mid-C20th laurel jungles in Mill Hill. Staged where the species needs it.

How I reduce safely

Hedge removal & stump work

Full removal with grinder access, root-ball lift where the plant is worth saving, and coastal-alluvium reinstatement. TPO and section-211 check first if you're inside a Middle Street, Upper Deal, Walmer or Kingsdown CA.

What removal involves

New hedge planting

The right species for the front line — Tamarix, Olearia traversii, Escallonia — and honest steer inland toward beech, yew or native hawthorn once you're behind the wind. No box after the blight crisis; Ilex crenata instead.

My promise

Three things you can hold me to.

A proper job, or you don't pay.

I don't ask for payment until you've walked the hedge with me and you're happy. If I haven't done what I said I'd do, I put it right or you owe me nothing. No deposits, no upfront, no chasing.

£

10% off for pensioners.

Anyone on a state pension, automatically. No card, no proof of anything — just mention it when you book. Honour system; I trust people.

10% off bigger return jobs.

Used me before? Your next job over £500 gets 10% off, no time limit, no asking. It's logged when I send the quote — you don't need to remind me.

Why local matters

Deal hedges aren't Thanet hedges.

Deal is not on the Thanet chalk. The Richborough Syncline puts the East Kent Chalk under Thanet Sand here; the surface you actually plant into is Holocene shingle and coastal alluvium. Rainfall is about 824mm a year. The prevailing wind is south-westerly, but the gardening problem is the cold, salt-laden easterlies off the Channel. RHS hardiness H4 to H5 — H5 on the front line.

That runs the species list. Tamarix and Olearia traversii on the seafront. Escallonia one row back. Griselinia if the client will accept winter browning. Pittosporum from Beach Street inland. Formal clipped yew and beech only once you're behind Middle Street, out of the salt. That's how Walmer Castle plants it too — holm oak (Quercus ilex) front line, beech and ash behind — and Wellington's gardeners knew what they were doing.

In a conservation area?

I handle the paperwork.

Deal and Walmer sit across seven conservation areas — Middle Street (Kent's first, designated 1968), Upper Deal (appraisal December 2019), South Barracks (1997, Lower Walmer), Nelson Street (2017), Upper Walmer (1977), plus the Kingsdown CA (1970, extended 1994 and 2016). Dover District Council maintains 57 CAs total and 55 Article 4 directions that remove permitted development rights on front-facing works. Any stem over 75mm at 1.5m needs six weeks' written notice to DDC before pruning. I file the section-211 notice on your behalf, included in every quote.

Neighbourhoods

Formal in Walmer. Cottage on Middle Street.

Middle Street runs sub-metre front strips of box and euonymus over the railings — ladders don't fit in the lanes, and the Georgian terraces demand a light, cottage touch. Two streets south in Walmer, the Victorian and Edwardian villas want mature hawthorn, holly and yew held to a sharp clipped line — CA-notice and often TPO territory. Kingsdown is clifftop, on the Saxon Shore Way to St Margaret's Bay, SSSI-adjacent. Mill Hill is inland, larger gardens, mid-C20th chalet bungalows and semis where laurel and leylandii still dominate. Same trade; four different jobs.

Middle Street & Seafront

Kent's first conservation area (1968). Georgian terraces, fishermen's cottages, narrow lanes, sub-metre front gardens. Cottage-loose planting, formal only in occasional courtyards.

Walmer & Kingsdown

Upmarket south — Victorian and Edwardian villas, mature clipped hawthorn, holly and yew. Kingsdown clifftop butts the Kingsdown-to-Dover-Cliffs SSSI; nesting-window discipline is non-negotiable.

Mill Hill, Sholden, Upper Deal

Inland west and north. Mill Hill is the affordable end — mid-C20th semis and chalet bungalows, larger gardens. Sholden is semi-rural with Sholden Meadows growing. Upper Deal was appraised as a CA in December 2019.

Cinque Ports heritage

Deal has a proper old-fashioned charm.

The Sunday Times listed Deal in its Best Places to Live UK in 2019 and again in 2022 — the only Kent entry both years, described as "proper old-fashioned charm… catnip to creatives." Deal is a Limb of Sandwich in the Cinque Ports federation. Walmer Castle, a Grade I heritage landscape and residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, is where Wellington died in 1852. Deal Castle is Henry VIII's most elaborate artillery fort — 1539-40, sixty-six firing positions on a six-bastion rose plan. The HS1 St Pancras run is one hour twenty-four, and that means DFL second-home owners who book remotely and want photo updates when the hedge is done. I send photos.

Seasonality

Peak: August to October.

Post-nesting, pre-winter — the main booking window. Native hawthorn and blackthorn cut September to February inside the WCA window. Second peak late February to early March before 1 March. May to July, evergreens get light shaping only, after a proper nest check. DDC garden waste runs year-round with a two-week Christmas pause, so I don't disappear over winter the way some operators do.
